IRD

January 1999
April 2000

I was working in Dakar (Senegal) as a junior geologist with IRD from January 1999 to April 2000. This was under French voluntary service organisation (Coopérant du Service National).
IRD or 'Institut de Recherche pour le Développement' is a French research organization present in several developing countries. It is the French equivalent of CSIRO with satellite overseas offices. I worked in the Mineral Resources laboratory. The subject of study was exploration in gold bearing laterites of Eastern Senegal. The research team included a geologist and a geophysicist and many students.
The principal objectives were :

- to determine how the transported regoliths were deposited;
- to determine the process of the geochemical mark of the bedrock towards surface;
- to identify and quantify the impact of the transport on gold particles.

My principal tasks were:

- Acquisition and data processing of electric geophysics : ABEM device, Res2dinv software.
- Acquisition and data processing of Ground Penetrating Radar : PulsEkko device and software.
- Description of lateritic profiles in artisanal pits
- Sorting of heavy minerals concentration, morphoscopic study of gold particles (binocular and SEM)
- Logistics for short field missions (10 to 15 days).
